Why Recology can't clear a room
San Francisco's curbside bulky pickup runs through Recology, and a residential account gets only a couple of free bulky-item pickups a year — by appointment, dragged to the curb yourself, a few items at a time. It can't empty a furnished apartment, it won't enter a SoMa or Mission Bay tower with a COI and freight-elevator requirement, and the annual cap is gone after one move. Built for SF's stairs, hills, and towers
The hard part of an SF furniture job is access: the narrow Victorian turn, the four-floor no-elevator carry in the Mission or Castro, the truck staged on a steep Nob Hill or Russian Hill grade, the reserved freight elevator and Certificate of Insurance in a SoMa, Mission Bay, or Rincon Hill tower. We split sectionals into pieces to clear tight stairwells and cabins, protect banisters and common areas, and load from the garage where there is one. A fourth-floor walk-up costs the same as the ground floor.
What happens to your old furniture
Pieces in good shape go to local donation or consignment instead of the landfill; the rest is broken down so metal, wood, and foam are recycled where possible. A furnished-unit clearout produces a lot that's still usable, and keeping it out of SF's waste stream is included in the flat price.
